4 Tooth Saving Tips for Thanksgiving Dinner

Let’s not talk turkey. It can be hard to maintain your oral health during the holiday season, what with all the tempting treats and disruptive travel. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. While it’s okay to enjoy a variety of seasonal favorites this Thanksgiving and beyond, here are a few tooth-friendly options that will help keep your smile looking and feeling its best during the most delicious time of the year!

Curb Your Carbs

Thanksgiving is famous for its carb-heavy side dishes like rolls, mashed potatoes, and of course, stuffing. But unfortunately, these foods can be dangerous for your teeth because not only do you enjoy them, so do the cavity-causing bacteria that live in your mouth. Don’t give these pesky little havoc-wreakers anything to be thankful for this year: reduce the amount of carbs you have on your menu by switching them out for vegetables instead.

Piece of Pie

Pie is a classic Thanksgiving dessert, but some varieties are better for your teeth than others. Pecan pie, for example, contains 31 grams of sugar per slice, while pumpkin pie only has a comparatively low 25 grams and is packed with vitamin A: something which benefits your periodontal health.

Beware the Bones

Eating turkey meat off the bone is fun at the renaissance fair, but if you have access to utensils, it’s best to cut the meat off and eat it with a fork. Many a tooth has been chipped due to accidentally biting into a drumstick bone. Skip the holiday trip to the emergency dentist and use your flatware instead!

Wine-down

Wine may be a classic celebratory beverage, but it’s packed with calories and can also stain your teeth. It’s also very acidic, which can easily erode your tooth enamel. Thus, opt for water with dinner this year, or at the very least alternate sips of wine with a glass of H2O.

Remember, Thanksgiving dinner is a time to appreciate all the wonderful things you have in your life, including your oral health. Don’t put your teeth and gums at risk this holiday. Enjoy your seasonal treats in moderation, and don’t forget to brush and floss before you head to bed on Thanksgiving night!
